Why Cold Patch Stays Soft or Does Not Harden

Cold-patch products do not all cure or stiffen in the same way. Some are designed to remain workable in storage and gain stability mainly through compaction and traffic; others have different set behavior. Start with the exact product instructions.

What to do

  1. Identify the exact product and find its current technical data sheet.
  2. Compare the placed layer depth and compaction method with the manufacturer’s directions.
  3. Look for movement, tracking, displaced edges, trapped debris, or water entering from a wider pavement problem.
  4. Keep people and vehicles away if the surface is unsafe or material is transferring to tires or shoes.
  5. Contact the manufacturer or a pavement professional when behavior falls outside the product guidance.
